Mixed Fortunes for our League Teams
Despite their best efforts the first team failed by just one point to guarantee them a place in the new 10 team first division starting next season.
Under the old division structure the team would have sat comfortably albeit disappointedly in 11th place. Starting their last game in eight place they sadly only gained 4 points from their encounter against a surprisingly strong Preston Nomads 3 side, consigning them to second division cricket next season albeit playing against sides that would have stayed in the old first division set-up.
The team were not too down-hearted. Captain, Luke Gregori saw many encouraging signs amongst the players with four of our younger players maturing nicely into strong cricketers. He commended his players for coming through some difficult phases during the season and for their support and whole-hearted commitment to the club. With this in mind he was confident that the stay in the second division would be only temporary.
The second team had more success. Needing to finish at least eighth to avoid 5th division cricket next season they left it late to decide their fate. With three games left it was touch and go. Their quest wasn’t helped by the loss of one of their star performers, George Clinton, through injury in mid July.
However, a trouncing of bottom of the table Hurstpierpoint three games out saw their fortunes swing but defeat at the hands of Burgess Hill 3 the following week meant a must win in the last game against Ansty. The weather threatened to scupper any chance as only 8 points for an abandoned game would have left them outside the top eight. Thankfully, however, Saturday dawned sunny and dry and stayed that way. Smallfield went about their job superbly with youngster Charlie Woolnough taking a wicket with the first ball of the game and a second wicket in his second over. All out for 83 and victory swiftly accomplished along with 4th division cricket next season. Captain Paul Cross congratulated his players on a great achievement especially as this was the second teams first full season as a unit as well as in League cricket.
