A brief history... and the future...
Smallfield Cricket Club was re-founded in 1955 (after being disbanded just before the war) and has continued to play at it’s Plough Road ground ever since. There have been a lot of changes in that time but this was accelerated in 1999 by entry in to league cricket followed in 2000 by the inauguration of an annual early season tour to Devon and latterly mid-week 20/20’s. The Club gained promotion from division 3 of the league at the first attempt but it wasn’t until the 2008 season that we finally won promotion to division 1. In 2009 we finished a creditable 8th with 223 points and had the distinction of achieving the highest batting points in the division. More details can be found on our Play-Cricket site.
Sunday and other friendly games have always been the backbone of the club and still flourishes today with a full fixture list playing at home and away at some of the most picturesque grounds in the area.
Now we have a second team in the league for 2010, in the 3rd division, the club is able to cater for all levels of cricketing skills from the casual player who enjoys the more relaxed friendly game to those who prefer the more competitive edge of league cricket at either 2nd or 1st team level.
We don’t have a Colts set-up as such but we do have a number of youngsters in the 14 to 18 year age range who play regularly in our Sunday and mid-week sides and occasionally get the opportunity to taste league cricket - even more chance from 2010! We will have both ECB level 1 and 2 coaches available and the club intends to bring on the youngsters and develop their skills for higher level cricket.
The Club is constantly innovating and welcomes new members from age 14 to, well, as old as you like. The club operates an entirely open membership policy and is completely non-discriminatory on any grounds. See our Constitution & Rules for more details.
